Ingredients
- 180g Ground turkey, 93% lean, raw
- 100g Hass avocado, peeled, raw
- 150g Raw romaine lettuce
- 60g Whole-wheat bread
- 114g Grape tomatoes, raw
- 10g Extra light olive oil
Method
- 1Prepare the ground turkey: Remove the 180g of 93% lean ground turkey from packaging. If starting from raw, form into a patty approximately 3/4 inch thick, slightly larger than your bread to account for shrinkage during cooking. Make a small indent in the center with your thumb to prevent the burger from puffing up during cooking.
- 2Cook the turkey burger: Heat a non-stick skillet or grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F if using a grill). Place the turkey patty on the hot surface and cook for 4-5 minutes until the bottom develops a light golden crust. Flip carefully and cook for another 4-5 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (use a meat thermometer at the thickest part). The burger should be cooked through with no pink inside.
- 3Toast the bread: While the burger cooks, lightly brush both sides of the whole-wheat bread slice with the 10g olive oil. Place in a toaster oven at 375°F or in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and lightly crispy. This adds texture and helps prevent the bread from becoming soggy from the toppings.
- 4Prepare the salad base: Rinse and thoroughly dry the 150g of romaine lettuce. Tear or chop into bite-sized pieces and place in a large bowl. Add the 114g of grape tomatoes (halved or quartered for easier eating).
- 5Slice the avocado: Cut the 100g of peeled avocado into thin slices (about 1/4 inch thick). Reserve a few slices for the burger top and add the rest to the salad bowl.
- 6Assemble the burger: Place the toasted whole-wheat bread on a plate. Top with the cooked turkey patty (it should still be warm). Arrange the reserved avocado slices on top of the burger. You can add a light sprinkle of salt and pepper if desired. Alternatively, serve open-faced with toppings on the side.
- 7Dress the salad: Drizzle the salad with a small amount of extra light olive oil (already counted in the patty cooking). Toss gently to combine all ingredients. Season with salt, pepper, and optionally a squeeze of lemon juice for brightness.
- 8Serve immediately: Place the turkey burger and fresh salad together on the plate. The warm burger pairs perfectly with the cool, crisp salad for a complete, satisfying meal.
